Well, the best thing to do is start off slow, and easy because if you go into it too fast, you'd eventually be like, "scr*ew this!". lol And we don't want that!

FOODS:
I hate it when people say things like, "I'm going to avoid carbs." or something like that because EVERY food group is important. The only think you should avoid is fast food places (ie: burger king, McDonald's, Wendy's, KFC, etc), and not buy junk food (ie: cookies, donuts, ice-cream, etc). Try to have 3 meals a day, with 2 snacks.

-breakfast
-snack
-lunch
-snack
-dinner

Try not to eat after 7:00 or 8:00. Drink plenty of water. It helps eliminate toxins in the body and helps move things along. Also, try to not eat when you're just bored, ya know? REALLY ask yourself: am I hungry? or do I just want something to put in my mouth? If you're REALLY THAT hungry, eat! If you're doing it because you're bored, suck on an ice cube, or drink water. ^_^. Don't worry about counting calories and crap. lol. Just avoid foods high in TRANS fat and SATURATED fat (a.ka. junk food)

EXERCISES:
Don't worry about doing crunches and sit ups to try and get that "nice flat stomach". It doesn't work that way. lmao. What you have to do is do AEROBIC exercise. Meaning, any exercise that gets your heart pumping, and when your heart pumps, you burn fat. Running, swimming, jumping rope, karate, cycling, and jogging are all forms of aerobic exercise. Of course, you should also add in the crunches and sit ups too because muscle burns fat.

MOTIVATION:
Since you joined the gym, I think that's enough motivation. lol. You are surrounded by people who have the same goals as you and are surrounded by people who KNOW what they're doing. If you want, try putting out fresh fruits and vegetables out on the table. Things such as strawberries, bananas, carrots, and celery. Put up pictures of healthy models (not those stupid stick thin models who starve themselves. People like tyra banks). And whenever you lose 10 pounds, go out and do something nice for youself. Get your nails or hair done. Try to resist buying outfits yet. Wait til you have reached your weight goal. That way you can splurge on ALL new outfits that fit your NEW BODY! ^_^

As we age, our bodies undergo physiologic changes such as a decreasing bone density, muscle mass declines, as well as hormonal changes in both males and females.

In adults especially, the proper intake of proteins keeps your immune system functioning and helps to produce enzymes for cellular growth; whereas a deficiency of protein in adults will result in muscle loss, weight loss causing fatigue and weakness, an increased frequency of infections, and a condition known as edema, which is fluid retention.

There are three basic components that adults must have to remain healthy as we age, water, fiber, and protein. Protein deficiencies in adults will occur most often in overweight as well as dangerously underweight adults, pregnant women, and geriatric adults, especially in relationship to bone and skeletal preservation.

Most adults have very little knowledge as to what their protein requirements are, and as a result they do not come close to adequate intake levels. In young adults, the skeletal muscle accounts for about 45 percent of your total weight, but by the age of 70, it accounts for only roughly 30 percent. Nitrogen balance is extremely important to adults in reference to the proper protein intake. This balance is an indication of protein syntheses and degradation. A positive nitrogen balance basically indicates that protein turnover in our body is adequate in that it provides a continuous exchange of material and energy to the body.

This is extremely important for adults, as a non-growing body is constantly renewing itself and in the process creating stability.

One of the best food sources for adults to prevent protein deficiency other than meat, poultry, or seafood, would be a common egg, and is by far the least expensive. Eggs have the essential amino acids required as well as a very high amount of protein.

All adults face the possibility of being protein deficient, but none more than vegetarians. However, if you are a vegetarian, you must also be aware the besides protein deficiency, so will face a very large risk of being deficient in both Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B 12.

Protein adult deficiency is finally starting to get some long overlooked research and acceptance, that indeed, adults can also be deficient with protein in their everyday lives.

I know I need to get rid of all my excess pounds, but how? Lose weight quickly with a healthy balanced diet and moderate exercise. It is really that simple, the problem is, most of us want a miracle and that is simply not going to happen. The fat came with time and unfortunately it is going to go with time! Do not lose heart though; there are ways to speed up the process if you are willing to put in that little extra effort.

1. Start with a healthy balanced diet:

Very important: if you are saying "I need to get rid of my fat," you have to eat healthy and you have to eat enough. This is the problem with all the fad diets, you eat too little and lose mostly water and muscle instead of fat. As soon as you start eating normal again, the water comes back and so does the weight except for the precious muscle you lost. The muscle you lose with a fad diet is one of the biggest problems that results in yo-yo dieting. With less muscle to burn energy, your metabolism slows down and you gain weight much easier than before you went onto the fad diet!

If you go onto the correct diet on the other hand, that will not happen and the weight loss will be real. With the correct diet you will not only lose water but you will burn fat. This is very important as going wrong here can really cost you in the future. Do not fall for a diet that makes you eat very little or mostly one kind of food. Most of all, stay away from those liquid diets. I do not mean healthy meal replacement shakes, I mean those "soups" that you can eat in unlimited quantities, but you still starve all day!

For a normal healthy eating plan you will eat ordinary, everyday foods that are easily available. There is not need to eat expensive "special" meals and bars. You can do very well on the food you normally buy. Get a diet that gives you a choice and lets you choose the food you prefer and that are readily available. It is better for your health and it is better for your pocket!

There are many diets out there, choose a good one, stick to it and you will have success.

2. Moderate exercise:

Here is where you can almost make the miracle happen. With moderate exercise you can speed up the process considerably. Take note though, "Moderate" exercise! No good will come of it if you go overboard. You'll burn muscle once again and it will be counter productive. For the best fat burning exercise you need to exercise at 60% of your maximum heart rate for about forty minutes, three to four times a week. Doing more will not burn more fat.

To work out what your maximum heart rate is, take 220 minus your age.  Now you can work out your optimal heart rate for fat burning take 60% of that. Now you have your maximum heart rate to work the most efficiently.  For example, if you were 42 years old, the formula would look like this. 220-42= 178. And now you get 60% of the 178 and that is 107. Divide that by 6 and you have a 10 second count if you are checking your heart rate manually.  If the machine gives you your heart rate you can work harder or slow down as needed to maintain the fat burning zone.

So, these are the basics if you are saying "I have to get rid of my fat, but how?" Lose weight quickly with a combination of the correct diet and healthy moderate exercise.
